Depression
Symptoms of depression can affect all aspects of a person’s life. Depression can feel very physical and it can make everyday stress more difficult to cope with and manage, often interfering in the pleasure of participating in the activities a person normally enjoys. Relationships may become stressed and a feeling of being disconnected from others may occur. If untreated, depression can go on unnecessarily for weeks, months and even years. Depression is almost always treatable. Research indicates that both a combination of medication and therapy is the most effective approach to treating depression. The range of symptoms for depression are listed below.
- constant feelings of sadness, irritability, or tension
- decreased interest or pleasure in usual activities or hobbies
- loss of energy, feeling tired despite lack of activity
- a change in appetite, with significant weight loss or weight gain
- change in sleeping patterns, ex. difficulty sleeping, early morning awakening or sleeping too much
- restlessness or feeling slowed down
- decreased ability to make decisions or concentrate
- feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, or guilt
- thoughts of suicide or death
